DiaDiwan letter

February 18, 2009

It has been my experience so far that whenever we try to separate ourselves from politics, we become automatons. Politics is a tricky word and it can mean simply the sense of justice that we all have, our capacity to reason and think and consider all sides of a situation. In its narrower or more commonly accepted sense it means the machinations of the state or the government in all these petty and violent conflicts that we are still involved in despite our better nature. We are political beings and we cannot or should not isolate ourselves from what is going on.

So, I think the aim of DiaDiwan is to be separate from one kind of politics- the kind that would support one political party over another or favor only artists of one political background; while still remaining close to another, one that supports justice and the right of all people to self-determination. After all, isn’t art and culture what we are all fighting for- the chance to live in a stable society where these discussions can happen? “
